Mom's the Word
THIS IS YOUR FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT MOTHER’S DAY IS SUNDAY, MAY 10TH.
Moms sure picked the short stick this year with a Mother's Day most likely spent in quarantine. And while I would guess that most moms are happy to shoulder that burden (because that's what moms do!) we should at least try to meet them at their superheroine level.
Below, I've compiled a quick list of my favorite woman-owned small businesses, ideas, and a few DIYs to shower the special mom figure(s) in your life.
Leif Shop
I’ve followed this shop for years, and its story is an interesting one; the lifestyle shop started online THEN became a brick and mortar store in Williamsburg, which is usually backward for most lifestyle shops and I love it. The story speaks to how well-loved and merchandised the store is. They have a lot of loyal customers, myself included. While you really can’t go wrong with their curated selection there are a few standouts, including this and this!
Organic Olivia
Olivia feels like a friend at this point. I follow her on Instagram and she provides so much great knowledge and insight into the wellness world. She is studying to be an herbalist, which has inspired much of her product line. Her bestseller and my favorite is Mane Magic, which helps with hair growth. I’ve used 2 bottles and have seen my hair take on a new life. For the right mom, this would be such a fun and indulgent gift! And for the expectant mother, I love this!
The Sill
An online plant company that delivers plants in chic, stylish planters? Sign me up. This is probably the most mainstream of my woman-owned small business round-up. And I am not sure if The Sill is still considered “small” with the way they have blown up in popularity in the past year or so, but I digress. I love the option of sending something other than flowers on Mother’s Day. It definitely takes the right person (not everyone is a plant person), but here are my two un-killable plant options: this and this.
Local Eclectic
This is a local (Chicago), woman-owned business that highlights up and coming woman jewelry designers. Basically a hole-in-one for a Mother’s Day gift. I love the range of designs and discovering new designers to keep my eye on. The best part? The price range is unbeatable, you can find something for under $50 that is well-made and unique! For mom, I love these and this sweetness.
Organic Bunny
Amanda has curated the most comprehensive round-up of truly clean beauty products. She is very discerning of ingredients, makes sure everything is vegan and animal friendly. In fact, she is the one who introduced me to my favorite concealer, featured in this post. Anyway, in addition to researching the best eco-friendly natural beauty products and accessories out there, she also runs a dog rescue, so Amanda really does walk the talk. Plus I feel great that my purchases help to support her charity as well. I love anything that this line makes and am intrigued by this. Both would be great for mom!
Coming Soon NYC
I’ve visited this shop. In fact the above picture is from their window display and it was one of my most liked pictures from 2018 (but who’s counting). This shop feels more like a museum, but has so many cute odds and ends for the quirky mom in your life. I am obsessed with this bowl and these.
Don’t forget about Etsy, Poshmark, and so much more!
I feel like I say this in every post, but this truly is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cool businesses that just so happen to be owned by a woman/women. I am always looking for new businesses to support and discover. Etsy is one of my favorite places to look for cute things like goat milk soap, beeswax candles, and unique mugs—all great mom gifts. And Poshmark is always a great way to find that unicorn clothing item or purse that mom has been lusting after for years.
I am floored by the talent that all women business owners and creators have, and I cannot wait to see the innovation and invention that evolves out of this current economic situation we all seem to find ourselves in.
